Board of Directors
The Alzar School is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Our passionate, committed Board works tirelessly to ensure the Alzar School accomplishes its mission of educating young leaders.
Dr. Kim Tanabe
Kim is a physician in Boise, Idaho, who loves spending time along the South Fork of the Payette River. She has been with the Alzar School since 2008, serving first as the Board’s Secretary before becoming President in 2010. She has been involved with other outdoor-related nonprofits and has taught kayaking in Idaho and Chile. She studied at the University of Washington.
Katie has been a volunteer, staff member, member of the Advisory Committee, and now a Board Member for the Alzar School. She has worked in the outdoor industry since 2000, and still continues to teach wilderness medicine for WMI. She joined the Board of Directors in 2010. She is a Physicians Assistant in Boise, Idaho. She studied at Middlebury College in Vermont.
Cailin, who currently serves as Local Recreation Advocacy Manager for the Outdoor Industry Association, started his journey in the outdoors as a teenager on a NOLS course. He has been a fellow with the Environmental Protection Agency and Policy Director at the Winter Wildlands Alliance. Since 2002 he has worked in the outdoor industry for ROW Adventures, NOLS, Alzar School, the McCall Outdoor Science School and others. When not behind a desk, he gets outside by bike, boat or ski as much as possible. Cailin earned his Master’s degree from the University of Idaho.
Shauna loves the outdoors, being involved in the community and her children’s activities, traveling, reading, and spending time on the Salmon River. Her daughter attended the 2013 Fall Semester at Alzar School, which inspired Shauna to continue her support of the great programming at the school. She joined our Board of Directors in 2014, and she is incredibly active in the Cascade community, leading with the Cultural Arts Center, Horizons’ Lifestyle and Education Team, and 4 Summit Challenge. She is a licensed massage therapist and obtained her B.A. from Trinity College and Theological Seminary.
Ken, an avid whitewater rafter, joined the Alzar School’s Board in October 2013 after serving on its Advisory Committee. From 1998 to 2011, Ken was the principal of Boise High School, helping the school cement its reputation as one of the top academic schools in the country. Ken also works with Idaho Rivers United to protect the rivers he loves.
Tucker lives in Alexandria, VA, where she and her husband both grew up and are raising their three children. The family enjoys traveling, particularly to excellent fishing holes around the country. With her M.Ed. and teaching background, Tucker enjoys finding unique and meaningful learning opportunities and experiences to enrich their children’s education. As the mom of a Spring 2014 Alzar School student, Tucker brings a parent perspective to the board.
