Alzar Gap Quarterly – December

Alzar School | 08.12.22

DIRECTOR OF ALZAR GAP Hello! My name is Lee Neale, and I’m the Director of Alzar Gap. I am reaching out to share information about upcoming events, programs and admissions travel this Spring. I’m currently down in Patagonia, Chile, meeting with providers and getting ready for our next cohort to arrive for our Spring Patagonia Exchange Program. We’ve added some new components to our Patagonia itinerary, including backpacking around Patagonia 2nd tallest mountain, Cerro San Lorenzo, and a multi day river trip down the Palena River culminating with a stay at the coastal Añihue Reserve.

A WORD FROM OUR ALUMNI FAMILIES: “Alzar Gap is absolutely a perfect place for a young man or woman to take pause, reflect on their future, and challenge themselves in the outdoors. My son was able to grow, challenge himself, take pause, appreciate nature, and develop skills for his future.” Jennifer Riordan (Alumni Mother)

INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT

Our Instructor Spotlight is on Ryann Savino, who joined the Alzar Gap team this Fall.

Ryann believes that the preservation of place is inextricably tied to the preservation of its stories and that belief is central in the work she chooses to do. For the past decade, her work has centered largely on environmental education, writing, and river guiding. She has worked as a river guide in both non-profit and commercial settings from the Southwest to California, currently guiding full-time in the Grand Canyon. Her favorite role on the river is mentoring and supporting other guides and passengers in learning new river and expedition skills. Ryann has taught English as a Second Language Courses (ESL), designed and curated museum exhibits, and values multi-generational collaboration and creativity. She studied abroad in South America in high school and participated in a gap year program and believes that both those experiences were extremely influential in the positive trajectory of her life. She holds a BA in Environmental Humanities from Whitman College and is honored and thrilled to be a part of the Alzar Gap team.
